Cult Of Luna - “Heartbeats (Elektronisk Balanserad)” mp3 at MySpace

Cult Of Luna’s MySpace have alternative keyboards and drums version of the opening track for Somewhere Along The Highway. Available for limited time only, so click download.

I think I’ll put this blog on hold for some weeks or so. I’ll have some wedding arrangements to finish next week, they’ll keep me busy. And yes, it’s me getting married. It’ll be a great day.

Review: Medeia - Quantum Holocaust World Domination cd

Medeia - “Shards” mp3
Medeia - “Medeia” mp3

You all know those circulating links that lead you to a website that innocently asks you to put on the speakers and then to find three differences from the included pictures. You start to closely look at the picture, hmm, they look the same, and then all of a sudden some damn ugly undead pops in front of the pictures screaming way too loud - and you shit your pants.

I love those stupid links.

Medeia is the band equivalent. Just lay back, listen to how ”Had This Dream” turn into “Had Clean Underwear”… Even if the band’s name connects with the emocore/whatever scene we all so righteously abhor, Medeia is first and foremost about heart attacks, not heartaches.

It’s hard to pinpoint Medeia’s sound since they borrow from a large variety of extreme music styles. They don’t compromise, but still at times that - being uncompromised - makes them sound too obvious or even naïve. Especially, knowing that this is self-financied album and also a project that have taken so much time that it’s unhealthy, suspicions whether it was worthy in the first place or not, arise. Always when the band lists dates when music for the album was written and it ranges over - say - five years period, raise red alert. After few more listenings, however, the band’s sound justify the means while all the small details start to unveil. It is possible for the listener to appreciate this music in a manner that it is being held dear for the band.

Apart from the uncompromising overall style, I love the riffs - mostly. At times they are like Dimebag jamming couple of Converge riffs, couple of 1990s Testament riffs and also something that I think is a Slipknot riff. Low end shredding with artificial harmonies and bends, it just underlines the fact that it’s a metal band you’re listening to. Vocals are high-pitched shreeks, and even if they are livid and insane, I’d like to hear more variety in that department. Songwriting is - well - promising, but still I think the album as a whole is much better than any individual song.

For a Finnish band they are fresh, but globally it’s hard to make a career from Tampere, Finland, with this sort of music. I wish them strenght.

Danny Cavanagh w/ Ville Valo

Danny Cavanagh feat. Ville Valo - “Inner Silence (live)” YouTube

Last Saturday I witnessed Danny Cavanagh’s (guitarist for Anathema) solo show at a smal local club. Two hours of personal, intense music that couldn’t been better. Danny performed mostly Anathema songs (also unreleased new songs), but also several cover versions, of which his remake of “Wasted Years” of Iron Maiden was really cool. My well-timed “Slayer!” shout provoked him play the first riff of “Raining Blood” as well, so he can’t be completely bad, right?.

Opening acts Silentium and Leafblade were also stunning. Silentium played as a four-piece and half of their six-song set was Opeth’s material. Leafblade included Danny Cavanagh as well, but more importantly Sean Rooney of Valle Crucis fame (or should I put it “fame”?). Leafblade’s material is serene and even magical with a nice twist of modern sense of melody as well as sort of medieval touch. I’ll get back to Leafblade blogging later.

Anyway, the video linked above is filmed from the same tour. Ville Valo of HIM joined Danny on stage at Semifinal in Helsinki and together they performed “Inner Silence” from Anathema’s Alternative 4 album. No matter what you think of HIM, that moment must have been special.

Snowblood’s heavy hits

Snowblood - “Aubade” mp3
Snowblood - “Appearance” mp3

Snowblood belongs to the same set of new bands that include Year Of No Light and Amenra, in my stereos that is. And I’ve known Snowblood for a mere 30 minutes now. I have to have this album. I could describe the sound of “Aubade” with a long and nonplussed “fuuuck”. If put against “Appearance” it is filthy and heavy, but altogether very beautiful in a dark manner that we all love. It sounds as if Souls At Zero would’ve been released just last May. Fuuuck

Deviant new material + a Nasum cover

Deviant - “To Give Ends” mp3
Deviant - “Inhale/ Exhale (a Nasum cover)” mp3

Swedish young death metal troopers Deviant have uploaded two unreleased tracks from their forthcoming four-song EP. New original tracks continues pretty much in the vein of their marvellous Larvaeon debut album, even if I’m sensing slightly more melodic approach.

Nasum cover is a Nasum cover, from a song that suits Deviant’s style better than many other Nasum songs wouldn’t.

Magyar Posse’s unreleased tracks

Magyar Posse - “Länsiväylä” mp3
Magyar Posse - “We Will Carry You Over The Mountains” mp3
Magyar Posse - “Violent Lover” mp3

Magyar Posse have unleashed three unreleased beasts: one from rehearsals for the new album and two from pre-debut album era. That is kind. There is also full live show recorded at Oulu, April 17th 2005, available for download. Which is kind also.

I’ll see Magyar Posse live action in two weeks. I should try to get to know better the new album which so far have remained much, much more distant their sophomore album Kings Of Time from 2004.

Ana Never

Ana Never - “Street Lights” mp3 (it’s 24 MB, 25 minutes)

Serbian postrock band Ana Never have their full-lenght album available for download: three songs on their official website and one song on their Myspace. I’m only on my first listening round, so I’m not going to go on any deeper analysis than “very much like GY!BE, especially the weeping guitar sound”.

Flies, those small banana flies has taken over our flat. ANd I poisoned them! But they keep coming back, they’re everywhere, in thousands. To quote stand-up comedian Teemu Vesterinen: “Fuuck”. Yeah, fuuck.

Lemonator - “Would You Die For Me” mp3
Lemonator - “Is It You?” mp3

Anyway, Avi/IAT! tipped on Lemonator mp3s. I haven’t heard any of their new music, so I was eager, and yes - it’s still cute. I’ve never been much of a fan (to some point Lemonator is still that “Yellow” band to me), but tracks like “Is it you?” couldn’t be catchier. And the other Grandpopp tracks are just as good as well.

To Lemonator fans those mp3s should have some interest in them, because there are handful of demos for the new album made available.

Megadeth - “The Mechanix (live 1984)” YouTube

“I thought Kerry was an ass for doing that. I think he was kissing Dave’s ass or something. I thought Slayer was the best thing going on. Why go hang out with somebody else?”

- Jeff Hannemann according to Decibel’s Oral History of Slayer.

Slayer - “South Of Heaven (Live 1989)” YouTube
Slayer - “Mandatory Suicide (Live 1989)” YouTUbe
Slayer - “Raining Blood/Silent Scream (Live 1989)” YouTube

From English 1989 show(s), done by BBC2. Song is being cut by interviews with Tom. I’ve had this on VHS for several years, at least this looks really familiar. Anyway, this is Slayer at their peak.

Pantera - “1989 rehearsal at Joe’s Garage w/ Kerry King” YouTube

These are the wonders that make YouTube such a special service: Pre-major success Pantera rehearsing Slayer songs with Kerry King. It’s mostly learning through “South of Heaven” (and “Raining Blood” also) but altogether a really cool piece of heavy metal’s silent history. However, it makes me wonder what was the purpose of this session?

Regina - “Minua ollaan vastassa” mp3

New single from Finland’s finest cute-pop group Regina. Song is taken from the cd-r single released by Songs I Wish I Had Written.

There’s something universal about Regina’s music, fact that their Finnish-sung debut will be released in Japan shortly speaks volumes about their charm and style.

Wacken Open Air streaming videos

There’s Celtic Frost, Morbid Angel, Aborted (with cover version of Carcass’ “Heartwork”), Emperor, Atheist and more. And if you didn’t know already, Immortal will be headlining next year’s WOA. Early notice, if not else.
