Norwegian experimental sound duo Ryfylke’s latest album arrived to my mailbox and left me soon wondering what it actually was telling me. I enjoyed the atmosphere Ryfylke was creating, but for the task of reviewing it, I had to email Sten Ove Toft and ask few things about their views on approaching the concept of music. Finnish readers can check that review at Noise.fi.

Anyway, as the ice was broke, I thought it’d be great to learn more about the musical tastes of Toft and asked him to make me a five-song mp3 mixtape. So, if you are interested in finding out about new (?) music from the more experimental end of Scandinavian artists, please check these mp3s.

No one blames you if you haven’t heard of Omega Massif before - they are so young band that they don’t even have a website up yet - but please consider this as a warm, friendly recommendation to get to know them now. Formed last autumn, this new German instrumental band have released one demo Kalt - which I will review later - and I thought they’d be good guides to let us know more about their own and local favourites. Still, the underground music scene in Central Europe is quite unknown to me, and I know there are many great bands out there.

It’a a great honour for me to announce that the tenth guest in Luuvitosen Vippi series is Greg Burns from Red Sparowes. Greg also played in “dark chamber folk sextet” Halifax Pier. Red Sparowes’ debut album At The Soundless Dawn was released last spring and it made a huge positive impact, gaining new friends to the band from many different musical backgrounds, from post-rock to metal fans. Follow-up to At The Soundless Dawn is recorded and waiting for a release through Neurot Recordings later this year. At the moment the band is preparing for their second European tour that will start on March 1st in Netherlands and end also in Netherlands, on April 7th.

“For someone that grew up listening to Yes and Rush, Zombi was an incredible discovery. Intense musicianship, no pretentions at all. They manage to capture everything good about 70’s synth rock and take it a millions steps further.

“This was one of the bands that started it all. Everyone seems to forget Tarentel and yet they were one of the most important bands in this surge of epic, textural, instrumental music. They’re still around today, and pushing the boundaries more than anyone else out there. A HUGE influence on not only my playing, but my musical tastes in general.

“Guitar for people that hate guitar. Here you have two of the founding fathers of textural guitar for indy rock nerds like me. Nels Cline turns the guitar into a fucking animal, you’ve never seen anything like this. His knowledge of the instrument and the pedals he uses is beyond admirable. I aspire to be half of the musician this man is. Here he teams up with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. What can I say about Thurston Moore that hasn’t been said? He redefined rock. This is the best collaboration I could ever hope for.

It’ve been quite a few months - seven to be exact- since the last time I had a guest appareance from United States. For past weeks nice lads from The Fatales have been working on an mp3 mixtape I asked for, and here it comes. Songs are hand-picked by vocalist/guitarist Wayne. And due to the fact that the songs are located at The Fatales’ server the links will be taken down in about a week. They are here for evaluation purposes only.

As for latest news about The Fatales you should check out their website. As far as I know they’re still looking for a label to release their material. In the meanwhile, you can listen to their new four-song demo and help spreading the word.

Reginan Katso maisemaa -levy kuuluisi mukaan joulukuussa kirjoittamiini vuoden 2005 parhaat levyt -listoihin. Levy on täynnä sympaattisia, ajatuksia herättäviä pop-kappaleita, jotka muutaman kuuntelun jälkeen kuulostavat siltä kuin ne olisivat aina olleet täällä. Lupatarkastajassa Regina esiintyi ensimmäisen kerran viime keväänä Jyrock 2005 -postauksen yhteydessä. Torstaina yhtye esiintyi toisen kerran Jyväskylässä, siksi niin ajankohtainen, ja onnekseni säveltäjä-tuottaja Mikko Pykäri innostui Luuvipin kokoamisesta: “Tuohan on kuin nakutettu homma minulle! Olet kyllä hienolla asialla, nimittäin olen itsekin innostunut laillisista mp3:sistaa ja soittanut joskus esim. Tapasimme Le Sportin keväällä yhteiskeikalla Turussa, ja ollaan pidetty yhteyttä mm. remixien muodossa. Tarkoitus olisi mennä Ruotsiin moikkaamaan poikia keväällä. “Business Girls” on aivan mahtava kappale. Odotan innolla yhtyeen pian julkaistavaa debyyttialbumia.

Friday Bridge - “The Story Of Agnes” mp3

Friday Bridgen “It Girl” räjäytti paketin täällä Tampereen Kyttälässä 2005, ja koska kyseinen kappale on jo kadonnut linjoilta lohdutusta tarjoaa Friday Bridge 2 EP:ltä löytyvä “The Story Of Agnes”.

Vielä saatiin yksi Luuvippi narrattua tälle vuodelle. Ruotsalaisen Lolita Stasin kitaristi Kjell Hansson oli ystävällinen ja raotti hieman länsinaapurimme maanalaista musiikkikenttää omien makutottumuksien mukaan. Varsin vähän tunnettuja yhtyeitä, kyllä. Pari viikkoa sitten Kjell vihjasi tuosta From Now Onista, jonka demo on kyllä niin rautaa, että ennätti heti minun vuoden parhaimpien julkaisujen listalle. Samalla listalla on myös Lolita Stasin Ruhr, joka vakuutti yhtä lailla kertalaakista olevansa varteenotettavan lohduton teos. Annetaan sana miehelle.

The latest and brightest stars on the Swedish post-hardcore heaven is definitely From Now On… “For What’s To Come” is from their debut demo and this is the perfect song if your planing to take your car for a ride down the abyss. Be preperad to step on the gas at about 6′36″ into the song.
Coarpnc. Smart. Weird. Music. Lots of twists here. What can I say. You got to love it. “J. Lynch” is from their third album.
With a voice, aggression, sensitivity and a live show most hardcore bands only dream of. When We Fall has it all. This is melancholy and anger. This is Swedish hardcore at its best. “Bishop Yard” is from their latest EP
I’m actually more of a dub-person, but Dubadown from Gothenburg makes great reggae with lots of soft vibes and emotions. The song “No Dub” is a dub-remix by Internal Dread and a internet release only. Dubadown release their debut album Killing Us this summer and despite the lack of “real” dub it’s a great album.”

Luuvippi palaa hetken tauon jälkeen, joka on ollut seurausta lähinnä siitä, etten ole ennättänyt potkia tarpeeksi tahoja, jotka ovat minulle vitosensa vipata. Ja nettipersoonani letkuruokintakausi jatkuu, sillä juuri viikonloppuna selvisi, että koneeni ei käynnisty, koska siitä on pamahtanut emolevy. Sen vaihto tarkoittaa monen muun asian vaihtoa ja ne kaikki yhdessä tarkoittaa paljon rahaa.

Mutta asiaan: Luuvitosen Vipin on koonnut tällä kertaa akustista ja klassista kitaraa As The Poets Affirm -yhtyeessä soittava Gary Udle. ATPA:sta olen kirjoittanut aiemminkin: kaunista, tummansävyisiä tunnelmia, kerroksittain ladottuna. Garyn vitonen sisältää ensikuulemalta jokseenkin hankalia biisejä, ainakin minulle, koska en ole tottunut näin jatsahtaviin säveliin kuten Burton Greenen avaus. Toisaalta, Jay Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlotsin päätösbiisi räjäyttää potin jo yksinkertaisemmallekin poppi-idiootille.

​*onomatopoeettinen nielaisu* Down My Throatin kitaristi Antti Malinen otti kutsun vastaan ja kasasi oman Luuvitosensa vihaisista hardcore-biiseistä. Neljä viidestä bändistä on ei-levyttäneitä, enkä minä tuota levyttänyttäkään ollut aiemmin kuullut, joten tässä tapauksessa Vippi toteuttaa tehtäväänsä enemmän kuin hyvin.

Down My Throatin debyyttialbumi Real Heroes Die uudelleenjulkaistiiin huhtikuussa. Yhtyeen kotisivuilla on mahdollisuus käydä lataamassa kaksi uutta biisiä demoversioina. Ja DMT:han on se suomalainen bändi, joka osaa naittaa hardcoren ja metallin juuri sillä oikealla tavalla.

Down My Throat - “In Hope For Redemption” mp3

English briefing: Helsinki-based Down My Throat’s guitarist Antti Malinen accepted my invitation and selected five intensive songs to be lined up for this week’s Luuvitosen Vippi. Being a guitarist of metal-influenced hard core band Antti stayed inside the style and introduce us to mostly self-financied/demo HC bands from Finland and Sweden. Last song is from US-based Cannae, and oh boy do they punish. Great set, absolutely!

Tällä kertaa Luuvitosen Vipin tarjoaa jyväskyläläinen Timo Häkkinen, joka soittaa rumpuja Atakhamassa (kuva, Timo toinen vasemmalta), Wherevictimsliessa ja Sotajumalassa. Nopeana, tarkkana ja säntillisesti harjoittelevana rumpalina tunnettu mies sai juuri endorsement-sopimuksen Pearlin kanssa. Ei ihan mikään pikku juttu. Atakhaman levy Existence Indifferent julkaistiin noin kuukausi sitten ja onpa lätty täällä Lupatarkastajan HQ:ssakin soinut tiheeseen. Hieno kotimainen death metal -levy kyseessä. Vitosessaan Timo sitten yllättikin valitsemalla varsin rauhallisia kappaleita.

Tämänkertainen luuvieras on helsinkiläisen Murmansk-yhtyeen basisti Olli Pouttu. Murmansk soittaa matalavireistä indie- rokkia, tyyliä jolla ei Suomessa ole liian monta yrittäjää. Lähettämällä kutsun murmanski- laisille halusin tarkentaa sitä, miten erilaiselta indiemusiikki näyttää helsinkiläisin silmin nähtynä, verrattuna minun punottaviin jyväskyläläisiin monitorisilmiin. Noh, ei kovinkaan erilaiselta.

Indie elää ja voi paksusti Pohjoismaissa

“Ruotsin indiemarginaalista noussut The Radio Dept. tekee säröistä, sumuista ja ah niin kaunista lo-fi –kitarapoppia shoegazing –perinteeseen nojautuen – joku lienee jo lanseerannut termin ”nu-gazing” tälle genrelle.
Tanskalaisen, toistaiseksi levytyssopimusta vailla olevan GimmiJapanin kaltaista musiikkia syntyisi varmasti silloin, jos The Cardigansin Nina Persson löisi hynttyyt yhteen Portisheadin kanssa. ”Teddy” –raidan loppupuolella löytyy hienoja interpol- tai kentmäisiä kitaroita, eikä kylmiä väreitä voi välttää.
Suomalaisessa indiessä herkistely onkin sitten hieman harvemmassa, mutta New Music Societyssa hääräävä Rubik onnistuu luovimaan sen ja rankistelun välillä hienosti. Jos tälle bändille pitäisi mutka ohimolla keksiä Suomen ”jotain” –määre, niin se voisi ihan hyvin olla ”Suomen Muse” tai ”Suomen Radiohead”. Bändin livekeikan jälkeen täytyy juoda paljon vettä – suu kuivaa kun sitä pitää liian pitkään auki.
Jo pitkään vastavirtaan kahlannut helsinkiläinen Echo Is Your Love tekee epävireistä, raivokasta ja angstista noiserockia, jota solisti Nean seireenimäinen laulu säestää. Bändi ei missään nimessä jätä ketään ilman mielipidettä. Kaupallista? Ei taatusti.
Kierros myös päättyy länsinaapuriin. On suorastaan hämmentävää, miten nopeasti siellä kyetään tuottamaan niin ajan ytimeen osuvaa musiikkia. Jos jokin kasaribändi on hip ja cool tällä hetkellä, niin Gang Of Four. Siihen peilaava CDOASS on juuri julkaissut debyyttialbuminsa. Tanssittavaa postpunk-funk-indiediskoilua, jolla on kaikki edellytykset breikata marginaalista isommille vesille, ja nopealla aikataululla. Tosin musa ei taatusti ole mitään uutta maan päällä – bändi jatkaa siitä mihin The Rapture ja Radio 4 ovat jääneet.”
